Dewey's Story :: Paul Moak

Dewey Boyd: Engineer, Producer, Musician.

Dewey explains how he and Paul connected and a little manual labor landed him his studio internship.

I’ve told this story a handful of times, but this’ll be the shorter version. But I, I uh, I, cuz I was interning with Shane who was next door... Paul: And he mixed the last record I did at that place. Dewey: Yes, yeah. And so I just, uh, Shane had just sent me the, like, Charlie Peacock sent out an email. Paul: Mhm. Dewey: because he needed someone to like help clean out his attic. Paul: Yeah. Dewey: I don’t know if I even, if I’ve ever told you this story. Paul: Nah-ah. Dewey: So um, so like, he was Paul: Which that’s kind of baller. Dewey: It is but I honestly Paul: I mean Dewey: honestly Paul: I need help cleaning out my attic.

Dewey: Yeah, so...Sent, sent out an email to his friends to go like, do you know someone young with a strong back to like move, hand papers down so, you know. Shane knew those guys from back when, when he worked with them and uh, and Richie was out there, Richie Biggs. And um, so he worked it out with Richie so I could sit in with him while he was doing whatever, uh whenever Charlie didn’t need me to hand stuff down to him to like sort through his old tax papers and stuff. Paul: Right. Dewey: And um, cuz the, the, it was like the attic of the recording studio was like attached. Paul: Gotcha. Dewey: Above the, next to the control room, so I could hear what they were working on. So, um, I was like man this is some really good stuff, what is this? Um, and Richie Biggs was like, “Oh it’s this girl named Joy Williams who used to do Christian music” Paul: Yeah. Dewey: “and John Paul White.”

So, uh, I accidentally, because of doing manual labor for Charlie, uh, sat in on the mixing of the first Civil Wars EP. Paul: That’s awesome. Dewey: And um, and uh, and then...so then I was like, so it’s like, like, I think there was enough time that elapsed between that and like when I met you Paul: Mhm. Dewey: that I realized like, oh they’re, these people are going places like this is, like I should, I should do this kind of thing.
